The Darphane ve Damga Matbaası (Turkish State Mint) traces its origins to Ottoman Istanbul in 1467. Since the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923 it has struck the Cumhuriyet altını — the "Republic gold coin" — in a ladder of fractional sizes (Çeyrek, Yarım, Tam) to the traditional 22-karat standard.
In a country shaped by recurring inflation and currency weakness, the Mint’s gold coins are the everyday savings instrument of ordinary families and the customary gift at weddings and births. The Cumhuriyet altını, in its various forms including the Atatürk "Ata Lira," is among the most widely held gold coins across Turkey and the wider Middle East.
