Founded in 1535, the Casa de Moneda de México is the oldest mint in the Americas. Its colonial-era silver "pieces of eight" once served as the world’s de facto reserve currency, circulating from Europe to Asia.

Today it strikes the modern Gold Libertad (.999 fine, since 1981) — famed for its Winged Victory and twin-volcano design — and the large historic 50-peso Centenario, first struck in 1921 for the centennial of Mexican independence and later restruck for bullion buyers. Both share the Ángel de la Independencia motif that crowns Mexico City’s most famous monument.
