Russia’s coinage is produced by the Moscow Mint (MMD) and the St Petersburg Mint (SPMD), both part of the state enterprise Goznak. The St Petersburg Mint was founded by Peter the Great in 1724, giving Russian coining a lineage three centuries deep.
For the Bank of Russia these mints strike the Georgiy Pobedonosets ("George the Victorious"), the country’s modern .999 bullion coin, introduced in 2006 and bearing St George slaying the dragon — the emblem of Moscow. Since 2022, sanctions on Russian-origin precious metals have sharply limited the availability of these coins in Western markets.
